It is one of the best-known trails in the Apuseni, a day's hike from Beiuș, with water, rock and forest all the way.
About the place
The Valea Galbenei reserve covers 70.5 ha in Pietroasa commune. The Galbena river forms gorges and waterfalls here; the Evantai Waterfall is about 7 m high and fans out from a resurgence, because upstream the river runs underground. The waterfall is halfway between the gorge entrance and the Galbena spring.
Hikes usually start at Poiana Glăvoi, about 40 km from Beiuș on the road through Sudrigiu and Pietroasa (about 75 minutes). Circuits through the gorge are 10–16 km and take a full day. On some stretches you hold on to chains or cables and cross wet rocks, so you need boots and hiking experience.
Good to know
- Start early from Glăvoi: the circuit takes a full day.
- Do not enter the gorge after heavy rain; rocks and chained sections become dangerous.
- Carry a map or GPS track; phone signal in the gorge is weak.
