About the place

In the late 11th century King Ladislaus I built a fortified monastery here, which became the seat of the Roman Catholic bishopric. Several kings of Hungary were buried here, among them Ladislaus I and Sigismund of Luxembourg. Between 1569 and 1648 Italian military architects built today's pentagonal fortress, with corner bastions and a moat that could be filled with thermal water from the Peța stream. The princely palace inside was finished in 1650. The fortress was restored and opened to the public in 2015.

The buildings around the courtyard house the Oradea City Museum, part of the Țării Crișurilor Museum. You see a lapidarium with Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance stonework, the ruins of a 12th-century church, a camera collection of about 500 items and exhibitions on the communist period. Tickets cost 15 lei per person for each permanent exhibition (5 lei reduced). The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am–6 pm from 1 April to 31 October and 9 am–5 pm from 1 November to 31 March; closed on Mondays.

Good to know
